Bart, Jean

Bart, Jean
(1650-1702)
   naval officer
Born in Dunkerque, Jean Bart enlisted in the naval service of Holland, then joined that of King Louis XIV at the time of the Dutch War (1672). In that capacity, as a corsair, he was quite successful. Notably, he broke the English blockade of Dunkerque (1694) and took or burned more than 80 Dutch merchant vessels (1696). For his exploits, Bart was ennobled by Louis XIV and made commander of a fleet (1697). There are many anecdotes of his courage and bluntness as a sailor, naval commander, and popular hero of the period.
